Creating with Dufy: How Art Inspires AI Imagery

Embracing Art and AI: How Raoul Dufy Inspires Creativity

Hello! If you’re reading this newsletter, I’d like to think you have a love for art. Perhaps you even work with images yourself, whether for personal projects or creative pursuits. Loving art can be a huge advantage when working with imagery—especially when it comes to generating AI images. Today, I’d like to introduce you to one of my favorite artists and share how you can incorporate their style into your AI creations.

While I’m not a fan of cold winters, I’ve been inspired to paint summer scenes during this chilly season. And when I think of the warmth and vibrancy of summer, one artist immediately comes to mind: Raoul Dufy.

Raoul Dufy: The Painter of Light

Raoul Dufy (1877–1953) was a celebrated French painter, illustrator, stage designer, and textile artist known for his radiant use of color and playful brushwork. Influenced by both Fauvism and Cubism, his works exude energy and positivity, often portraying scenes of leisure like seaside resorts, bustling harbors, and musical performances.

Dufy’s art is characterized by a harmonious interplay of color and line, earning him the nickname “Painter of Light.” His pieces strike a delicate balance between timeless beauty and modern expressiveness, inviting viewers into a world of optimism and freedom.

Incorporating an Artist’s Style into AI Imagery

To apply an artist’s style to AI-generated images, the simplest method is to include their name in the text prompt. For example, in tools like MidJourney, you can use phrases such as “by Raoul Dufy” or “in the style of Raoul Dufy” to evoke his artistic essence. Here are a few key tips to make the most of this process:

  1. Be mindful of copyright. When referencing artists, keep copyright in mind. It’s best to avoid using the names of living artists or those who passed away within the last 70 years.

  2. Experiment across different contexts. Use an artist’s style for projects beyond their original medium. For instance, you could draw on Dufy’s painting techniques to create patterns for product packaging or fashion designs.

  3. Combine with style codes. In MidJourney, using style codes like --sref or --p alongside an artist’s name can produce striking results. For example, I experimented with Dufy’s style and found codes that enhanced his signature vibrancy in entirely new ways.

  4. Generate artistic patterns. Dufy’s playful, lighthearted aesthetic works beautifully for creating patterns that can be used in product or packaging design. His whimsical motifs, like animals or seaside scenes, translate effortlessly into designs full of joy and charm.
